Evli has had climate principles guiding its investment activities since 2019. However, biodiversity has become an increasingly important theme in investing, making it crucial to also address nature-related factors in responsible investment principles.

Biodiversity has become a significant theme in responsible investing alongside climate change, and the two themes are strongly interconnected. Climate change is one of the main drivers of nature loss. On the other hand, biodiversity helps protect against the harmful effects of climate change and improves the ability to adapt to it.

The new climate and nature principles set the framework for Evli’s climate and nature work. As these themes are strongly interconnected, Evli aims to advance both in a mutually supportive way. Developing climate and nature work is one of Evli’s focus areas for responsible investing which were updated in 2025, and the publication of these integrated principles marks a significant step forward in Evli’s responsibility work.

The importance of biodiversity is reflected in Evli’s responsible investment focus areas, as biodiversity research was added as a specific topic in 2022. In 2023, Evli published its wealth management’s biodiversity roadmap, which set out steps for developing nature-related work from 2023 to 2025. The goal of this roadmap was to create nature-related principles.

“Since climate change and nature loss are closely linked, it’s important that both perspectives are considered in our climate and nature work. This also aims to avoid, for example, causing significant harm to biodiversity through climate-related decisions,” says Jenni Moilanen, Junior Analyst for Responsible Investing at Evli.

“In spring 2025, Evli updated its responsible investment focus areas, combining the development of climate and nature work, as it was seen that the themes and related development work should be kept closely aligned,” adds Elina Niiranen, Senior Analyst for Responsible Investing at Evli.

Guidelines for Analysis, Monitoring, Engagement and Reporting on Climate and Nature Work

The climate and nature principles define Evli’s approach to analysis, monitoring, and reporting in relation to climate and nature work. Evli regularly monitors EU-regulated indicators on the principal adverse impacts of investments on sustainability factors (PAI indicators, Principal Adverse Impact Indicators), which also include direct nature-related metrics. Additionally, as part of portfolio analysis, Evli utilizes nature-related indicators as recommended by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework, which for the financial industry are sectors considered material regarding nature and operations in nature-sensitive locations. Evli also uses other available tools and data in its analysis to identify nature-related risks, dependencies, and impacts within its investments.

Evli has for a long time engaged with companies on climate issues, encouraging them to set science-based climate targets and to report in accordance with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework. In the new principles, nature has been added as a separate theme within company engagement.

The principles also cover Evli’s reporting on climate and nature activities. Evli publishes an annual climate and nature report in accordance with the global TCFD and TNFD frameworks. In addition, Evli produces client portfolio and fund-specific responsibility reports, which have included climate and sustainability metrics for several years. In the future, Evli intends to add nature-related metrics to these reports as well.
